Etsy printable wall art sizes: ratios, pixels and file limits
Here is the short answer. Most printable wall art on Etsy ships as five files, one for each aspect ratio: 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 and the ISO A-series. Each file is made at the largest common size for its ratio, at 300 pixels per inch, and the buyer prints it at any smaller size with the same shape. Five files is also exactly what Etsy allows: up to five files per listing, each no bigger than 20 MB (Etsy Help).
If you remember one number per ratio, make it the long side of the biggest file: 10,800 px for 2:3, 7,200 px for 3:4, 9,000 px for 4:5, 4,200 px for 11:14 and 9,933 px for A1. The rest of this page shows where those numbers come from, which frames each file covers, and how to keep them under Etsy's limit.
The five ratio files and what they cover
| Ratio | Frame sizes it covers | Largest common size | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2:3 | 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 in | 24×36 in | 7200 × 10800 |
| 3:4 | 6×8, 9×12, 12×16, 15×20, 18×24 in | 18×24 in | 5400 × 7200 |
| 4:5 | 4×5, 8×10, 12×15, 16×20, 24×30 in | 24×30 in | 7200 × 9000 |
| 11:14 | 11×14 in (22×28 in has the same shape) | 11×14 in | 3300 × 4200 |
| ISO A (1:1.414) | A5, A4, A3, A2, A1 | A1, 594×841 mm | 7016 × 9933 |
11×14 needs its own file because its shape sits between two others. Print a 4:5 file 11 in wide and it comes out 13.75 in tall, a quarter inch short of the frame. Print a 3:4 file 11 in wide and it is 14.67 in tall, so the frame cuts off two thirds of an inch.
Is 5:7 the fifth ratio instead? Seller guides disagree. One guide lists 5:7 as a sixth ratio next to the other five. Another keeps the same five and says to skip 5:7 unless your niche needs it. The arithmetic explains why the five-file set usually wins. A 5:7 print is 1.400 times as tall as it is wide; an A-series sheet is 1.414 times (ISO 216). Print the A-series file 5 in wide and it is 7.07 in tall, so a 5×7 frame trims 0.07 in. The ISO file covers 5×7 in and 50×70 cm closely enough, and the fifth file slot stays free for 11:14.
Pixel sizes at 300 DPI, ratio by ratio
Inch sizes: pixels = inches × 300. The largest size in each ratio is the one to export; buyers print it smaller.
| Ratio | Print size (in) | Print size (cm) | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2:3 | 4×6 | 10.2×15.2 | 1200 × 1800 |
| 2:3 | 8×12 | 20.3×30.5 | 2400 × 3600 |
| 2:3 | 12×18 | 30.5×45.7 | 3600 × 5400 |
| 2:3 | 16×24 | 40.6×61.0 | 4800 × 7200 |
| 2:3 | 20×30 | 50.8×76.2 | 6000 × 9000 |
| 2:3 | 24×36 | 61.0×91.4 | 7200 × 10800 |
| 3:4 | 6×8 | 15.2×20.3 | 1800 × 2400 |
| 3:4 | 9×12 | 22.9×30.5 | 2700 × 3600 |
| 3:4 | 12×16 | 30.5×40.6 | 3600 × 4800 |
| 3:4 | 15×20 | 38.1×50.8 | 4500 × 6000 |
| 3:4 | 18×24 | 45.7×61.0 | 5400 × 7200 |
| 4:5 | 4×5 | 10.2×12.7 | 1200 × 1500 |
| 4:5 | 8×10 | 20.3×25.4 | 2400 × 3000 |
| 4:5 | 12×15 | 30.5×38.1 | 3600 × 4500 |
| 4:5 | 16×20 | 40.6×50.8 | 4800 × 6000 |
| 4:5 | 24×30 | 61.0×76.2 | 7200 × 9000 |
| 11:14 | 11×14 | 27.9×35.6 | 3300 × 4200 |
| 11:14 | 22×28 | 55.9×71.1 | 6600 × 8400 |
Metric frames with the same shapes ride along: 30×40 cm is 3:4, 40×50 cm is 4:5, and 40×60 cm and 60×90 cm are 2:3. A 60×90 cm print needs 7087 × 10630 px, which the 24×36 in file already exceeds. If you want your 11:14 file to cover 22×28 in as well, export it at 6600 × 8400 instead.
ISO sizes: pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × 300, rounded to the nearest pixel. Dimensions from ISO 216.
| Size | mm | Inches | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| A5 | 148×210 | 5.83×8.27 | 1748 × 2480 |
| A4 | 210×297 | 8.27×11.69 | 2480 × 3508 |
| A3 | 297×420 | 11.69×16.54 | 3508 × 4961 |
| A2 | 420×594 | 16.54×23.39 | 4961 × 7016 |
| A1 | 594×841 | 23.39×33.11 | 7016 × 9933 |
| A0 | 841×1189 | 33.11×46.81 | 9933 × 14043 |
A1 is the usual top of the ISO file. A0 at 300 DPI is almost 140 megapixels, twice the A1 file, which makes the 20 MB limit below much harder to meet.
Etsy's file limits for digital downloads
Checked on Etsy's Help Center on 18 September 2026 (How to Manage Your Digital Listings).
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Files per listing | Up to 5 |
| Size per file | 20 MB maximum |
| Most you can deliver per listing | 5 × 20 MB = 100 MB |
| Accepted image types | .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, plus .pdf and .zip |
| File name | Up to 70 letters, numbers, periods, underscores or hyphens |
Three details matter for wall art. WebP and TIFF are not on Etsy's list of accepted types, so print files go up as JPEG or PNG. File names cannot be edited after upload, and buyers see them, so name files by ratio before uploading (for example sunset_2x3_24x36.jpg). And a ZIP is accepted but counts as one file under the same 20 MB cap. It lets you bundle more than five files, not deliver more megabytes, and zipping JPEGs saves little because they are already compressed.
The 20 MB cap is the real constraint. A 7200 × 10800 image is 77.8 megapixels, which is 233 MB of raw colour data. Getting that under 20 MB takes compression of more than ten to one, which is JPEG territory. A lossless PNG of detailed artwork at that size will usually be well over the limit.
What 300 DPI actually means
The pixels are the resolution. The DPI number stored in a file is a tag that tells software how big to print by default. Midjourney's own image size guide shows this: setting a file to 300 DPI in Photoshop with "Resample" off keeps the pixels the same, and a 2048 × 2048 px image makes a 6.8 × 6.8 in print at 300 DPI (2048 ÷ 300). That holds whatever the tag says: a 2048 px file tagged 72 DPI and the same file tagged 300 DPI print identically at 6.8 in. Changing the tag adds no detail.
300 DPI is the standard target, but labs accept less for large prints. Bay Photo asks for 200 to 300 PPI at print size. Richard Photo Lab says to choose 150 to 300 DPI depending on viewing distance, and Midjourney's guide notes that some posters print well at 150 DPI because they are viewed from further away. At 200 DPI a 24×36 in print needs 4800 × 7200 px; at 150 DPI, 3600 × 5400 px. Treat those as the floor a lab will accept, not the target to build to. You do not control how large your buyer prints or how close they stand to it.
JPEG or PNG. Bay Photo says JPEG, PNG and TIFF give an identical print when the pixel dimensions, bit depth and colour space match, and it prefers JPEG because the file is smallest. It also requires 8-bit RGB files with alpha channels removed, so a transparent PNG is not a print file there. Richard Photo Lab also recommends JPEG at 300 DPI. For Etsy wall art that means a high-quality JPEG, with PNG kept for products where transparency is the point.
sRGB. Richard Photo Lab recommends the sRGB colour space for consistency across devices. Bay Photo accepts sRGB, Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB, but asks for the ICC profile to be embedded. Your buyer might print at home, at a pharmacy kiosk or at a pro lab, so sRGB with the profile embedded is the safe choice.
The gap between a Midjourney image and a print file
Midjourney's upscaler documentation gives the V8.2 sizes. A standard image is 1024 × 1024 px at 1:1 or 896 × 1344 px at 2:3. The Subtle and Creative upscalers double that to 2048 × 2048 or 1792 × 2688 px, HD images are generated at the doubled size, and those cannot be upscaled further in Midjourney.
| Midjourney V8.2 image | Long side | Largest print at 300 DPI | At 150 DPI | Enlargement needed for 24×36 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, 1:1 | 1024 px | 3.4 in | 6.8 in | 10.5× |
| Standard, 2:3 | 1344 px | 4.5 in | 9.0 in | 8.0× |
| Upscaled or HD, 1:1 | 2048 px | 6.8 in | 13.7 in | 5.3× |
| Upscaled or HD, 2:3 | 2688 px | 9.0 in | 17.9 in | 4.0× |
Even the largest Midjourney file covers only the smallest 2:3 size, 4×6 in, at full 300 DPI. An 8×12 in print from it comes out at 224 DPI. Every size above that needs more pixels than Midjourney produces, and Midjourney's own guide points you to third-party upscaling tools for larger prints.
Getting from a Midjourney image to these sizes
The order of operations matters more than the tool.
- Generate at 2:3 portrait. It is the tallest shape in the set. Every other ratio (3:4, 4:5, 11:14, ISO) is wider for its height, so each one is a crop off the top and bottom of a 2:3 image, never off the sides. Leave some room above and below the subject.
- Upscale once, to the biggest file. The 2:3 master needs a long side of about 10,800 px. Upscale before cropping, so every ratio is cut from the same large image and you run the AI only once.
- Crop the master to each ratio at full resolution, then check each crop against the pixel tables above.
- Export JPEG in sRGB with the profile embedded and 300 DPI in the tag, then check that every file is under 20 MB. If one is over, lower the JPEG quality a step rather than reducing the pixel count.
We make AlphaUpscale, a Windows app that handles step 2 and the export in step 4. It runs Real-ESRGAN on your own graphics card, with no uploads or credits, and enlarges by exact multiples: ×4, ×8 or ×16. A 1792 × 2688 upscaled Midjourney image at ×4, or an 896 × 1344 standard one at ×8, becomes 7168 × 10752 px. That is 298.7 DPI at 24×36 in, 0.4 percent short of the table. It saves JPEG at quality 95, 92, 90 or 88 with full colour resolution, sRGB embedded and 300 DPI written into the file. It marks any file up to 8,192 px that is over 20 MB, and never shrinks or recompresses a file on its own. Larger masters are marked only above 100 MB, so check your cropped files' sizes when you export them. It does not crop to print ratios yet. That is planned, and for now step 3 happens in your image editor. The first 20 images are free; after that it is $29 a year or $4 a month.
We sell an upscaler, so weigh that paragraph accordingly. Everything else on this page links to Etsy, the print labs or Midjourney.
Frequently asked
What sizes should I offer for printable wall art on Etsy? Five files: 2:3 at 24×36 in, 3:4 at 18×24 in, 4:5 at 24×30 in, 11×14 in, and A1. Between them they cover every frame size in the tables above up to A1.
What is Etsy's file size limit for digital downloads? 20 MB per file and five files per listing, according to Etsy's Help Center. A ZIP counts as one file under the same 20 MB limit.
How many pixels is 24×36 at 300 DPI? 7200 × 10800 px. Multiply each side in inches by 300.
How many pixels is A1 at 300 DPI? 7016 × 9933 px. A1 is 594 × 841 mm; divide by 25.4 and multiply by 300.
Do I need a separate 5×7 file? Usually not. The A-series file is within about 1 percent of 5:7 and prints at 5×7 in with a 0.07 in trim.
