Privacy Policy
The short version
AlphaUpscale processes your images entirely on your computer, using your own graphics card. The app does not upload your images, the files it makes, your image list, your settings or its diagnostic log. It uses the internet to check for and download app updates, to download its background-removal model once and, after you enter a license key, to activate and periodically check the license.
What the app processes locally (and we never see)
- The images you add, and every file the app makes from them. They are read from and written to your own disk.
- Your image list, thumbnails, settings and the free-image counter, stored in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\AlphaUpscaleand the Windows registry on your computer. - The diagnostic log, stored in the same folder. It reaches us only if you choose to send it: Report a problem opens an email draft in your own mail program and copies the log to your clipboard, and nothing is sent until you paste it and press Send yourself.
The app contains no analytics, telemetry or advertising.
What we receive, and why
- App updates. The app checks AlphaUpscale's GitHub release feed shortly after it starts and every few hours, and downloads an update in the background when one is available. GitHub receives the ordinary information involved in any internet request, including your IP address. It does not receive your images.
- Background-removal model. On first launch the app downloads the model it uses to remove backgrounds (about 180 MB) once, from a copy we host on GitHub, or from the model's original GitHub release if ours is unreachable. GitHub receives the ordinary information involved in any internet request, including your IP address. Nothing about you or your images is sent.
- Purchases are processed by Stripe. Your payment details go to Stripe. We receive and store your purchase email, Stripe customer and subscription identifiers, plan and subscription status so we can issue and manage your license. Our licensing service also keeps the Stripe event used to process each subscription change; depending on what Stripe collects at checkout, that can include your name and billing address. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to the payment itself.
- License activation. When you enter a license key, the app sends the key, a one-way-hashed machine identifier (the raw identifier never leaves your computer), your computer's name, the app version and, as with any internet request, your IP address. We use this only to enforce the three-computer limit per key and to prevent abuse. The app repeats this check quietly every few days. The free images before you buy are counted on your computer; nothing is sent for them.
- Email. License emails are delivered by Postmark. We send transactional email only (your key, replies to your messages), never marketing without your consent. Our mailbox is hosted by Proton.
- Support. If you email us, we receive what you send, including any log or image you choose to attach.
- This website is hosted on Netlify, which keeps standard server logs. Fonts load from Bunny Fonts, which receives ordinary request information such as your IP address. We measure website traffic with PostHog (hosted in the EU) in cookieless mode: it records the pages you view, the referring site, your country, browser and device type, and which links and buttons you click. It sets no cookies and stores no identifier in your browser; visits within one day are grouped by a salted hash of your IP address and browser that cannot be reversed or linked across days or sites. It never sees anything you type into forms. The site stores only your dismissed language suggestion in your browser's local storage. The "Lost your key?" form sends the address you type to our licensing service for the sole purpose of resending your key. The installer is downloaded from GitHub.
Sharing and retention
We use Stripe for payments, Postmark for transactional email, Proton for our mailbox, Netlify to host this website, Bunny Fonts to deliver web fonts, PostHog to measure website traffic, DigitalOcean to host the licensing service, and GitHub to deliver the installer, updates and the background-removal model. Each provider receives only the information described above or the ordinary request data needed to provide its service. We do not sell personal information.
License, device, subscription and Stripe event records currently have no automatic deletion date. Daily backups of the licensing service are kept for 14 days. Some purchase records must also be kept for tax and accounting obligations. You may ask us to delete information we do not need to keep for those obligations.
Your choices
The 20 free images are counted on your computer and need no account or license check. To ask what we hold about you, or to ask us to delete it, email team@alphaupscale.com.
Changes
If this policy changes, the current version will always be at this address, with its effective date above. AlphaUpscale is not directed at children under 13.
